IABP was carried out in 7 dogs with our own made balloon and an improved home-made counterpulsation pumping device. The results of our studies showed that balloon pumping caused (1) a highly significant elevation in the mean aortic diastolic pressure (MADP) of 19.9 mmHg (P< 0.001) and a 19.6% increase of blood flow in the circumflex branch of the left coronary artery (P<0.001); (2) a highly significant lowering of 8 mmHg in the peak aortic systolic pressure (P<0.001), and of 20.1 mmHg in the peak left ventricular systolic pressure (P<0.001) and a 12.9% reduction in the peak rate of change of left ventricular pressure (dp/dt max) (P<0.001); (3) a highly significant reduction of 3.5 mmHg in the left ventricular end diastolic pressure (P<0.01); (4) a significant increase of 25.3 ml/min in the cardiac output (P<0.05); and (5) a 78% increase in the collateral blood flow in the ischemico myocardium distal to the ligation (P< 0.05).It was concluded that IABP in dogs with our device increases coronary perfusion pressure and coronary arterial blood flow. It also improves the collateral circulation distal to the occluded coronary artery, and lessens the left ventricular after load.The hemodynamic effects of IABP observed in this experiment were comparable with those reported in the literature. The safety of IABP with this device has also been testified.

In 15 anesthetized open-chest dogs,the responses of some regional vascularbeds were examined by constant flow perfusion method during the 5-HT-inducedaortic hypertensive chemoreflex.Following 5-HT(200μg)injection,the meanblood pressure was abruptly increased,and the perfusion pressures in gracilis mus-cle,hindpaw and kidney were considerably elevated.The increments in perfusionpressure of aforementioned vascular beds were 43±8,47±5 and 56±27 mmHgrespectively,and remained unchanged after injection of atropine and propranololinto these regions.In contrast,the coronary perfusion pressure showed littlechange following 5-HT injection whether the perfused region was pretreated withpropranolol or not.By injecting 5-HT into the perfusion circuit directly,the perfusion pressuresin hindpaw and kidney were regularly increased,while those in gracilis muscle andcoronary vessels were decreased.Neither skeletal nor cardiac muscle vessel res-ponse could be blocked by propranolol.From the results obtained,it was suggested that(1)during the aortic hyper-tensive chemoreflex the responses of cutaneous and renal vessels as well as those ofskeletal muscle vessels were mainly vasoconstrictive,and there was no noticeablesympathetic vasodilating activity involved;(2)in peripheral vessels,there mighthave two types of 5-HT receptors,one of which was preferentially distributed incutaneous and renal vessels for mediating vasoconstriction,and the other may belocated in skeletal and cardiac muscle vessels for inducing vasodilation.
