By analyzing the main problems existed in the graphic modeling method utilizing the common programs such as AutoCAD, a new filling method based on mathematics was proposed for the modeling of polyhedron space frame structures. The corresponding computer program was developed and was applied successfully in the modeling of the "water cube" structure for Beijing Olympic national swimming center. It is shown that the graphic method is only suitable for the modeling of small structures, while the proposed filling method is of high efficiency to realize quick modeling for large structures.

Polyhedron spatial frame derived from foam physics theory is a new spatial structure,which is created and used in the National Swimming Center "Water Cube".It has the advantages of high repetition,less joined members, less node types,good load-carrying capacity,good aseismic behavior and fine ductility.The basic cells of this structure are polyhedrons in foam theory which fill three dimensions efficiently.This paper presents the basic cells in the new polyhedron spatial frame structures——the semi Weaire-Phelan polyhedron cells.Both the graphic analysis method and mathematic analysis method are adopted to study the geometric constitution of polyhedron cells,exploring an important character,i.e.the shape of this kind cells is controlled only by a single independent parameter,which can be defined as the shape controlling parameter c.The rational range of value c in polyhedron spatial frame,the relationships between c and the total member length as well as the number of member length are thus found.These results are the base of the framing theory for this kind of new structure.

基于气泡理论的多面体空间刚架是一种全新的空间结构,具有重复性高、汇交杆件少、节点种类少,结构承载、抗震、延性好等特点,在国家游泳中心“水立方”结构中得以应用。这种新型结构的基本单元是气泡理论中对三维空间进行有效填充的多面体。本文提出了新型多面体空间刚架结构中的基本单元———类Weaire-Phelan多面体单元,并通过图形解析和数学解析两种方法研究基本单元的几何构成,揭示了该类单元的重要特征———其基本形状仅由一个独立参数所控制,可定义其为形状控制参数c,并进一步揭示了多面体空间刚架中c的合理取值范围以及c和空间刚架总杆长及杆长种数的关系。这些研究成果为这一新型结构的几何构成奠定了理论基础。
