The fiber cellwalls of kenaf bast and woody fibers are composed of primary wall(P) and secondary wall(S). The secondary wall is divided into S_1,S_2 and S_3 layer,S_2 layer is the widest one and is not laminated,S_1 layer is thicker than S_3 layer in the hast fibers while S_1 layer is thinner than S_3 layer for woody cell. For kenaf bast fiber and woody fiber,microfiberil arrangement of primary wall shows much irregularity.How- ever,that of S_1 layer is cross spiral,and that of S_2 layer is unidirectional spiral. Distinct differences in tissue structures and fiber appearance exist between the bast fiber and the woody fiber. The bast fiber has a thicker wall with a small lumena,slender in appearance and with few pits.The woody fiber, however,has a thinner wall with a large lumena,stout in appearance and with more pits.Evidently,their responses to pulping and papermaking will be distinctly different.
