We have designed and developed a simple network environment based interactive multi-view video prototype system. The system architecture includes two parts (server and client), which connected by high speed internet. The whole multi-view video signal processing and data transmission chain consists of several functional blocks: recording; coding; transmission; decoding; synthesis and display. Our system provide two kinds of interactive multi-view applications for users: 1) interactive views switch; 2) Time froze views smooth switch. The virtual viewpoint synthesis algorithm plays a very important role in multi-view video system. The main task of this part is to design and implement the synthesis algorithm in our multi-view video system. The algorithm deals with two kinds of data—the foreground data and the background data. For the foreground data, the algorithm consists of three parts: selecting and tracking feature points; building incompletely 3D construction and interpolating virtual view point images. For the background data, we adopt sprite method to produce a panoramic image. Finally we combine the two results to get the virtual view point image. As a key technology to serve a wide variety of applications, multi-view video coding has some requirements: high compression efficiency, view scalability, low delay random access and so on. In the coding structure called simulcast, each view is coded independently of the other views. In the inter-view prediction based GoV(group of views) coding structure proposed by us, all views are divided into several groups to facilitate random access. In each view group, anchor pictures are coded using prediction across different views (the anchor frame of the middle view in view group are coded independently, and used in other views’ anchor frames prediction). Non-anchor pictures are encoded using temporal prediction in the same way as simulcast. We employed H.264/AVC video codec in our experiments, got about 1~2 dB compression gains of anchor frames (the first frames of the views). In this paper, we introduced the architecture and function of an interactive multi-view video on demand system, and introduced the virtual view points’ synthesis algorithm. We also proposed an inter-view prediction based GoV coding structure, which could facilitate coding efficiency and low-delay random access, and its corresponding network transport protocol.

多视点视频是近几年视频处理领域研究的热点,它的提出体现了下一代多媒体应用网络化、交互性和真实感的方向发展.本文介绍了交互式多视点视频点播系统的结构框架和其支持的交互功能;简要介绍了虚拟视点合成算法;提出了基于视点间预测的多视点分组编码方案,能够提高编码效率和支持低延时的随机访问;以及描述了相应的系统网络传输交互控制协议.
