In the anther culture of F2 hybrid from crosses between japonica varieties with distinctly different rate of differentiation of green seedlings, signs of screening effect were also observed after anther culture.Through the anther culture of varietal cross between indica and japonica rice, 3 japonica lines (H215, H242 and H209) for the late rice crop with high resistance to rice blast, had already been selected in only 3 years, showing that in breeding by hybridization with indica-japonica rice varieties, the use of anther culture may be one of the good measures in enhancing the effectiveness of breeding.The progeny of the pollen plant, H2 or H3, of the improved variety had shorter plant height and shorter growing duration in comparison with the original variety, indicating that the progeny of the pollen plant showed signs of depression in vigor, but the screening effect of the culture medium as to vigor was not observed. It is, therefore, suggested that more intensive research is essential in the use of anther culture for the maintenance of improved varieties. Meanwhile it is also observed that different isogenic lines may possibly appear in a improved variety by anther culture.
