According to Levinson informativeness principle, in ones speech, one should “make your contribution as informative as is required for the current purposes of the exchange.”(Levinson:1983) The inverse application of the principle is to make ones speech more informative than required. The aim of such application in English oral teaching is to make students talk more, go into detail in their narration, descriptions or arguments,the necessity of which is called on by some cases in our daily communications....

The scheme theroy also sheds light on the possibility. Teaching materials again contribute to such application. From the writers experience, the inverse application of informativeness principle can lead to the increase of students interest in oral practice, which in turn brings about a better result in raising their own oral ability.

The Chinese students' inability of speech in foreign languages has its cause in the attempt to establish the system of sound signs by learning of written signs. learning Language is first of all the learning of oral language, which in turn means the learning of sound signs. The goal is accurate and secured acquisition of the sound signifiers and their agreed upon relationship with the signified. It can be realized only in oral teaching when the written signs of the textbook be converted into sound signs.
