The thermodynamics and kinetics of V_2O_5 reduction in an electric furnace melting high speed steel are described. Results of experiments proved that V_2O_5 could be used as alloying addition in place of Fe-V, and this is of economic significance.

Charge calculation of alloying ingredients is of key importance to the reduction of production cost in alloy refining. To reduce decisively the production cost to a minimum, this paper suggests an opti-mized charge calculation method for alloying ingredients, which is regarded as necessary to replace the empirically-based routine one. Resulting from this calculation method, it is expected to utilize effectively the raw materials now available as well as the improvement of product's quality and hence...

Charge calculation of alloying ingredients is of key importance to the reduction of production cost in alloy refining. To reduce decisively the production cost to a minimum, this paper suggests an opti-mized charge calculation method for alloying ingredients, which is regarded as necessary to replace the empirically-based routine one. Resulting from this calculation method, it is expected to utilize effectively the raw materials now available as well as the improvement of product's quality and hence to raise the economical benefit.Summary. An optimum model of charge calculation of alloying ingredients for alloy refining has been established by use of linear programming. Several kinds of raw material applicable to a certain alloy are then chosen in the right proportion so as to provide satisfactorily the specified contents of major ingredients and to restrict the impurity contents within the limit acceptable, and further to equilibrate the material flow, in alloy refining process. Thus, the minimum value of raw material cost function can be obtained. Combining the actual conditions of refining process in an alloy refining works using this method to produce Pb-based and Sn-based alloys', problems as the optimization of combination of raw materials and the trend analysis of some ingredients within their standard contents region predetermined are discussed as well. A comparison between two kinds of possible schemes of alloying ingredient choice are made, one is the varieties of ingredient combination including several independent schemes under a defined raw material condition and the other is a grouping scheme which includes several ingredient combinations joined together also under a defined raw material condition, to facilitate the comprehensive utilization of resource available and to reduce the cost of raw material as much as possible. As a result, significant economical benefit has been gained insomuch that 27% in raw material cost and 26% in production cost are reduced op the average.

An examination of the boundary microstructures and analysis of the microhardness variation at boundaries have been conducted on a powdered Ag- Cu composite (bimetal). A diffusion model for the sintering of compacted Ag- Cu bimetals was presented to calculate the diffusion-alloying depth in the boundary area by using the Fick's second law of non-steady diffusion. The results showed the calculated values are consistent with those obtained from the microhardness measurement and electron microprobe analysis....
