The results show that these 28 releves can be classified into six plant community types,which are distinguished along a soil-water gradient. In addition,the application of numerical classification and ordination in vegetation ecology and a comparison of these methods applied in this paper are discussed.

The soil water storage of the upper layer (0-100cm)of the former is more than that of the middle layer (100-200cm) and the under layer (200-300cm). The soil water storage of the three layers of the latter is approximately equal. The soil water seasonal change can be divided into three different stages: the consumption stage from late spring to early summer and the storage stage from late summer to early autumn and the second consumption stage from late autumn to early winter. The vertical change of soil water can be divided into three layers: the utilization layer, the transitional layer and the complementary layer. The evapotranspiring amount has a bearing on the amount of precipitation. The absolute evapotranspiring amount is directly proportional to the latter and the relative evapotranspiring amount is inversely proportional to the latter.Because of water deficiency in growing season in the bushwood, a series of measures should be taken to improve the soil water condition.

In this paper, the plant communities in aJpine tundra of Mt. Changbai were studied using the methods of DCA ordination (DECORANA program)and TWINSPAN polythetic hierarchical divisive classification (TWINSPAN program).The results show that 59 types of plant communities in the alpine tundra of Mt.Changbai were basically arranged along a soil-water gradient of the second axis in DCA ordination and could be classified into 12 groups by TWINSPAN. In this paper, the plant communities in aJpine tundra of Mt. Changbai were studied using the methods of DCA ordination (DECORANA program)and TWINSPAN polythetic hierarchical divisive classification (TWINSPAN program).The results show that 59 types of plant communities in the alpine tundra of Mt.Changbai were basically arranged along a soil-water gradient of the second axis in DCA ordination and could be classified into 12 groups by TWINSPAN. In addition, a comparison of the results by DCA and TWINSPAN and by traditional classification was made in this paper.
