An examination of the published records shows that, unlike in Southwest China, the Middle Carboniferous corals in this region as well as in other places of South-east China have not yet received due attention. The first descriptions of them in this area were by Prof. J. S. Lee and S. Chu thirty years ago. They reported the following species, obtained mostly from the Nanking Hills: Chaetetes lungtanensis Lee et Chu Ch. flexilis Lee et Chu Ch. raritabularis Lee et Chu Multithecopora huanglungensis Lee...

An examination of the published records shows that, unlike in Southwest China, the Middle Carboniferous corals in this region as well as in other places of South-east China have not yet received due attention. The first descriptions of them in this area were by Prof. J. S. Lee and S. Chu thirty years ago. They reported the following species, obtained mostly from the Nanking Hills: Chaetetes lungtanensis Lee et Chu Ch. flexilis Lee et Chu Ch. raritabularis Lee et Chu Multithecopora huanglungensis Lee et Chu Lithostrotion reticulatum Lee et Chu Arachnastraea asiatica (Lee et Yu) Since then, nothing has yet been written by anyone. It is necessary, however, to pay heed to them notwithstanding the limited number they yield in this area. They are far less abundant than those of South-west China whether in forms or in the number of individuals. The specimens described here were collected by the writers from the Huanglung-zu (Middle Carboniferous) at Meishan of Changhsinghsien, in North Chekiang province, during the field work in Sept. 1963. The Middle Carboniferous strata of this region are exposed completely and well preserved, with a total thickness of about 89.6 meters, containing a rich fauna of fusulinids, corals and brachiopods. The corals are so abundant in number that they may properly be compared in wealth with those of South-west China. It is scarcely found, as is known, in the other parts of South-east China. A brief statement for the stratigraphical section may be generalized from top downward as follows: Superformation: C_3, Chuanshan-zu Disconformity (c) Light gray and pinkish massive compact pure limestone, with rich fauna. 68.7 M. (b) Whitish gray massive coarse crystaline limestone, void of fossils. 10.6 M. (a) Gray and purplish massive compact dolomite, begining with a basal conglomerate 0.5 M. thick, fossils absent. 10.3 M. Disconformity Subformation: C_1, Kaolishan-zu There is evidence that, from what has been stated above the dolomite bed (a) rests directly with a disconformity upon the Kaolishan-zu (early Visean), wanting the Hochow-zu (lately Visean), there having been a long erosion stage here before the deposition of the Middle Carboniferous deposits. The corals which the writers are studying now are collected entirely from the compact pure limestone (c). A preliminary determination for them is given below: Arachnastraea kaipingensis (Grabau) Yoh Lithostrotionella miocystosa Chen et Huang sp. nov. L. changhsingensis Chen et Huang sp. nov. Caninia trinkleri Schindewolf Gshelia elliptica Chi Wentzellophyllum minor Chen et Huang sp. nov. Multithecopora penchiensis Yoh All of the above species were unknown in South-east China. It is the first time they are found in this area. It shoudd be noted that the genus Caninia is so densely aggregated in individuals that it concentrates in group in a layer 0.3M. thick, forming a prominent coral-bed. It consists of a single species and occurs in the upper part of bed (c). Special attention also has to be given to the genus Wentzellophyllum, the species of which mostly occur in early Permian and are very scarce in the Middle Carboniferous strata. Genus Gshelia, which is widespread in the Middle Carboniferous of USSR, is poorly developed in China, and no typical species at present has been discovered. Its horizon in this region is far lower than the other genera and it is always few in number. The present discovery of the above genera and species in this region is of great interest in so far as it enriches the Middle Carboniferous fauna of South-east China and furnishes some new materials to the stratigraphical correlation with its equivalents in Southern China.

本文研究了江苏南部中石炭世的一些四射珊瑚,共8属10种,其中1新属8新种。通过四射珊瑚的研究及与其共生的中石炭世的(竹蜓)类的发现,指出宜兴、溧阳一带黄龙灰岩(组)及其下白云岩夹灰岩透镜体(本文称丁山组)的时代均属中石炭世。丁山组为中石炭世巴什基尔晚期,上覆黄龙组为莫斯科期。
