Periodate oxidation of methyl 6-O-triphenylmethyl-伪-D-gluoopyranoside (MTGP) in mixed solvents (50% V/V THF-water and DMF-water) was shown by sodium arsenite titration to proceed very slowly after consuming one mole of oxidant. The product at the moment of consuming one mole of periodate was isolated and its structure determined by degradation so as to establish that the oxidation took place regioselectively at C_2-C_3. On the ground that its IR spectrum showed no carbonyl function, it reduced Tollens'...

The product at the moment of consuming one mole of periodate was isolated and its structure determined by degradation so as to establish that the oxidation took place regioselectively at C_2-C_3. On the ground that its IR spectrum showed no carbonyl function, it reduced Tollens' reagent but had no effect on Sohiff's reagent and it formed a monoacetate, the oxidized pyranoside should have undergone a double lactalization so as to slow down the oxidative process. The regio-selectivity is attributed to the steric influence of the bulky triphenylmethyl residue.

The cytotoxic and cytogenetic effect of sodium arsenite and sodium arsenate on Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells is reported. Chromosome aberrations were incuced with both arsenic compounds. Trivalent arsenic was more clastogenic than pentavalent arsenic. Sodium arsenite was also shown to produce increased sister chromatid exchange in CEO cells and increased chromosome breakage in human lymphocytes.

This paper presents the results of studies on cytogenetic effects of sodium arsenite on mouse bone marrow cells. The chromosome aberration, SCEs and micronucleus changes caused by arsenite in vivo were studied. Results showed that arsenite did not cause chromosome abrration in vivo as shown in vitro studies. However,arsenite can elevate SCEs and micronucleus changes that can be seen in vitro studies. The authors have compared and discussed the results between ia vitro and in vivo studies....
