The recent developments of laser surface treating and rapid manufacturing are proposed in this paper. In which, laser surface techniques includes laser cladding, laser cleaning and laser surface polishing. For the direct manufacturing of metal parts out of serial materials, the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) process can be applied, (also called rapid prototyping).

Selective laser melting (SLM), which produces up to 100% density prototypes with good mechanical properties directly from CAD data, is a rapid prototyping process for direct product realization from metal powders or ceramic materials. The core component of SLM equipment laser should have excellent laser mode, fine spot size, high response velocity, and all these can be well achieved by fiber laser rather than conventionally adopted YAG laser, which provides infinite development space for fiber laser in SLM. At present, SLM devices adopting fiber laser are capable of building parts and inserts from low melt alloys, zinc, bronze, stainless steel and tool steel.

选区激光熔化(SLM)是一种直接由金属粉末或陶瓷材料成型产品的快速原型制造工艺,它从CAD原型出发建构几乎100%致密、具有良好机械性能的原型。这就需要其核心部件激光器具有光束模式好、光斑细、响应速度快的特点,而光纤激光器比起传统采用的YAG激光器可以更好地满足这些要求,从而为光纤激光器在SLM中的应用提供了无限的发展空间。目前,采用固体光纤激光器的SLM设备已经能用低熔点合金、锌、青铜、不锈钢和工具钢生产零件或模具嵌件。
