The title of her lecture was "Marine Biotechnology Trends...

Abstract At the "International Symposium on Progress and Prospect of Marine Biotechnology" (ISPPMB'98) held on October 6 ̄9, in Qingdao, China, organized by the Biotechnology Action Council/UNESCO, the Chineses Center of Marine Biotechnology/BAC/UNESCO, the Qingdao Association for Science and Technology and the Ocean University of Qingdao, Prof. Dr. Rita R.Colwell, a world famous marine biotechnologist and the Chairman of ISPPMB'98 gave an invited lecture. The title of her lecture was "Marine Biotechnology Trends and Applications." At our invitation and with agreement of the author, this significant lecture is published in the Journal of Ocean University of Qingdao. This lecture made an overview on the definition of marine biotechnology, genetic engineering, the research fields of marine biotechnology, marine molecular microbial ecology, marine molecolar genetics, marine bioremediation and their applications. There were 200 participants attending the ISPPMB'98 coming from 20 countries, regions and international organizations. The Organizing Committee for ISPPMB'98 received 135 papers, which were presented at the ISPPMB'98 by oral or poster presentation.

Lastly, the bigger progress in molecular microbial ecology in which non culturable soil mioroorgamisms can be detected by genomic DNA libraries which can be used to explore soil microbial diversity including the colonzation of introduced microbes to rhizosphere.

The establishment of rRNA techniques and their application has opened a new page for molecular microbial ecology and systematics. Major techniques and progresses of rRNA techniques and their application in microbial ecology are reviewed in detail. Potential problems during application and possible resolutions are discussed.
