On the basis of a feature based part model, the relationship between the features, manufacturing process and manufacturing equipment is established. With this relationship and the capability of the manufacturing equipment, the manufacturing constraints including those on individual features and inter feature relations are established. To facilitate the representation and handling of the constraints by rules, individual features and feature combinations are both treated as sub structures of parts....

On the basis of a feature based part model, the relationship between the features, manufacturing process and manufacturing equipment is established. With this relationship and the capability of the manufacturing equipment, the manufacturing constraints including those on individual features and inter feature relations are established. To facilitate the representation and handling of the constraints by rules, individual features and feature combinations are both treated as sub structures of parts. Each constraint rule is composed of two portions. The first is used to match the corresponding sub structure, or, in effect, the sub structure is extracted from the part information. The second is the actual constraint to be imposed on the sub structure. During evaluation, if the first portion of a constraint rule is matched with some sub structure on part information, then the sub structure should satisfy the second portion, the actual constraint, of the constraint rule. The use of rules has simplified the representation and handling of manufacturing constraints.

Since they are incomplete so far as all the design requirements are concerned, the part information, not necessarily complete, is processed by inference to check whether the part satisfies the constraints instead of actually finding a way out of the constraints. The latter is the job of the designers while the system just provides the guides from the point of view of constraints. A prototype system of such manufacturability evaluation has been implemented. In the system, the constraint rules are expressed as the clauses of the Prolog language and an internal inference engine is used to process the part information and the related constraint rules. The results of evaluation will be fed back to the designer for future improvement of the design.

Substructures that may contain such indirectly guaranteed dimensions are extracted from part information according to the corresponding descriptions of such kind of substructures, so that the dimensions on the part which can not be guaranteed directly can be identified, and used in dimensions tree transformation. In dimensions tree transformation, the dimensions tree, which represents the related dimensions in a certain direction, are transformed to a new dimensions tree which contains no indirectly guaranteed dimensions. Dimensions represented by such new dimensions tree can be judged directly through capabilities of the corresponding manufacture equipment.
