In this paper a set of mathematical models are suggested to simulate the operation of power generating facilities, which, taking into accounts of actual situations in the system, has proved to be practically useful. In our models, the system is divided into several subsystems, loading capacity and power lose of inter-subsystem transmitting lines are considered. But the intra- subsystem networks are largely simplified to reduce the complexity of the models. During a typical workday, every large power generating set is assumed to keep in a certain state──either on or off, which is signified in our models by a corre- sponding 0-1 variable. Properly choosing the value of these 0-1 variables we may obtain the results in the maximum utilization of unstirable energy,such as hydraulic energy, and optimum operation of the system. Load duration curve, which signifies the power demand is approximated by a multistep function. Increasing the steps may result in a higher accuracy, but will mean while greatly enhance the complexity of the models.To find a way out of this dilemma we introduce a two-stage technique in our models.
