This paper has dealt with the relationship between the composition of the rare earth benzilate complexes and the conditions of their preparation. The solubilities of these complexes in organic solvents, the results obtained from the infrared, nuclear magnetic resonence, ultraviolet spectra, thermorgravimetric and differential thermal analyses have been studied and discussed. It is found that all these comlexes contain hydroxyl groups and crystal water. The number of crystal water varies with the condition of preparation. These complexes dissolve difficultly in many organic solvents. The solubility of these compounds in absolute ethyl alcohol, the association degree and the temperature of thermal dicomposition decrease with the increase of the atomic number of the rare earth elements.

The title compound crystallizes in the space group C26h-C z1/c. with unit cell constants a=20.264A, B = 17.209A, c = 10.548A, ,β = 103.603°. Intensities of 2358 independent reflections were collected with four circle diffractometer using MoKa radiation. After reduction for diffractometer data, we derived first the position parameters of all the V atoms by direct method using SHELXTL program. The coordinates of all the non-hydrogen and hydrogen atoms were obtained from successive Fourier and difference syntheses....

The block-diagonal least-squares refinement for all atoms gave a final discrepency factor R = 0.065.The result of structure analysis shows that all the six protons of each decavana-dic acid are captured by six nitrogen atoms involved in three ethylenediamine molecules. In crystal, the isopoly decavanadate anions, cations and the crystal water are linked together by ionic forces and hydrogen bonding and the chemical content within a unit cell has been identified as4[V10O28]6- · 12[H3+NCH2CH2N+H3] · 24H2O.

Results show that the crystal water is dehydrated in two steps for the trichloroaeetate hydrates of Pr and Nd, while that of theothers are in three steps and the loss of weight of the seven kinds of salt in each step is in close agreement with the values calculated in accordance with the dehydration process proposed by the authors. Consequently, the proposed hydration processes are reliable and the dehydration enthalpies corresponding to each step of the process have also been determined by the DSC method.
