    In the present paper the synaptosomes in the cerebral cortex of mice ofdifferent ages were prepared by means of ultracentrifugation in discontinuoussucrose density gradients,and the content of amino acids in synaptosomeswas determined by an ultramicromethed using the dansyl reaction,followed bychromatography on polyamide thin layers and fluorenscence measurements.The results showed:(1)The synaptosomal protein content in the cerebral cortexof mice increased significantly with age during postnatal development up toadulthood;however,there was no change in protein content in synaptosomes fromadulthood to old age(5.68 in newborn,21.37 in adult,and 19.14 in aged mice inmg per g.wet weight).(2)The content of the neurotransmitter amino acids insynaptosomes changed with age:GABA increased during postnatal development anddecreased during aging while taurine decreased both during development and aging.The content of glutamic acid as well as aspartic acid increased during postnataldevelopment,but there was no change in the content of these amino acids fromadulthood to old age.(3)The ratio of the“inhibitory”to the“excitatory”transmitteramino acids decreased with age,the ratio being 3.39 in the newborn,1.06 in theadult,and 0.79 in old age.(4)Apparently 2 bands of cerebral cortex synaptosomeswere observed,P_2B and P_2B',in the sucrose density gradients in aged mice.Theoontents of GABA,glutamic acid and aspartic acid in the synaptosomes in P_2B'decreased by 24.2%(P<0.05),50.4%(P<0.001),and 44%(P<0.001)respectivelyin comparison with those in P_2B.
