The experiment involved 169 pigs from 13 cross combinations besides two pure breeds(female).The pigs,all weighting 25 kgs at the beginning, were divided into two groups.One group was placed on an unlimited con- ventional diet throughout the fattening period;the other,on improved diet to be restricted in late stage.When the pigs reached 95 and 120 kgs,their car- cass and meat quality were determined.The results are as follows: 1.The F_1 from South Breed male × meat-fat type female showed a decrease in lean rate by 1.56-5.62 percentage units(P<0.05)and an increase in skin rate by 2-4.58 percentagw units compared with their dams,thus the carcass quality was redused.When the F_1 was crossed with an early imported lean type(with a lean rate of 54-55%),the result of F_2 was still unsas- factory.The best results were achieved from lean meat type × meat-fat type. For example,combinations of Duroc × Shenhua,Landrace × Shenhua and Duroc × Russiah Large White couid all attain a lean rate up to 56.53-59.65%. 2.Properly reducing the diet energy level while maintaing a higher pro- tein level in the late stage of fattening could raise the lean rate without substantially lowering the gain.Twelve combinations indicated an increase in lean rate by 5.25 percentage units(P<0.01). 3.Increasing the slaughter weight from 95 kgs to 120 kgs would cause a reduction in lean rate by 0.86 percentage unit.In other words,every 10 kg increase in liveweight would evoke a decline in lean rate by 0.34 percentage unit.The figure was slightly lower than those reported in over- seas countries.This was perhaps due to the low temperature in the late stage of fattening.
