The resistance to Fusarium wilt of these collections was evaluated. lt was attempted to screen the materials with high disease resistance and good iber quality for cotton improvement.Results showed that the seed of G. hirsutum races was generally small in size with significantvariation. Among 178 colletions, the average seed index (weight of 100 seeds ) was 7. 37 ± 1.17g, 23. 9percent lower than that of 9. 68±0. 74g in 40 cultivars. Compared with sped index ofrace marie-galante (6. 81g),it was the biggest in race yucatanese (8. 64g). There were whiteand brown two types of fiber color and white, green and brown three tyoes of fuzz in all thesecollections. Fiber properties were measured in some collections of eight races by Spiulab 9OOHVT sustems. Their 2. 5% fiber span 1ength was 20. 6-27.0mm, fiber strength 20. 1-24.9g/tex, Micronaire 3.5-5.2. As for fiber strength, it was general higher than that of cultivars inthese races.178 collections were innoculated with Fusarium oxysporum. f. sp. vasinfectum race I to evaluate their resistance. The results showed that the colored fiber trait of upland cotton is controlled by one paire of uncomplete dominance genes. Four near-isogenic lines of upland cotton, which carried colored fiber(Lc) vs its normal-fiber equivalents(Lc) in two backgrounds, were grown in replicated experiments,15 agronomic properties were studied. The results were as follows: the colored fiber genes had negative effects on lint yield,lint index,fiber length,fiber strength,micronaire and disease resistance and had positive effects on seed index. The effect degree was related to their backgrounds. It had no significant effects on seed cotton yield,bool size,bolls per plant,plant height at harvest,number of fruit branches and so on. However, with effective selection, the yield and fiber properties of the original colored fiber parents might be obviously improved by cross and backcross.
