The electro-magnetic induction initiating system for blasting engineering, because of its obvious safety features and operational advantages over existing electric and non-electric initiating systems, has been greatly developed in the recent years. In 1984, Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy undertook a research programme to develop a powerful, checkable initiating system based on the electro-magnetic induction principles: The work proved a success. The total number of electric detonators of the system that may be blasted in each round has been increased to 420—940, and 12 meters or even longer legwires of the detonators can be used as compared with the MAGNADET system developed by the Nobel's Explosives Company Limited of ICI. Another attractive progress made is that a set of testing instruments has been especially invented for the system, which makes it checkable before firing just like in normal electric blasting. This set of instruments can also replace normal testing instruments for electric blasting. The paper describes these developments and field experience with the new initiating system and its testing instruments to date.
