     The TOPEX/POSEIDON and ERS-1/2 satellite altimeter data from October 22, 1992 to July 17, 2001 are used to analyse and compare the zonal propagation velocities of oceanic Rossby waves in the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean by using 2-D Radon transform method. With the grid data of winter of 1981-1982 from ECMWF, the teleconncction and evolution feature of 500hPa contour field with 30-50 day time scales over middle-high latitudes and tropical-regions in Northern Hemisphere winter are studied by using the method of bandpass filter. It has been found that, the distribution of 30-50 day period oscillation of the contour field is associated with the principal atmospheric activity centres over middle-high latitudes and corresponding to the convective activity centres, the wavetrain centre has latitude-longitude propagation, and at the same time the propagation direction of wavetrain has interannual change. The zonal propagation direction of height field oscillation is consistent with that of wavetrain.

A formula for measuring the baroclinicity of the atmosphere has been defined in this paper. By using the observational data, the relationships between the baroclinic mode of the atmosphere and the spacial structure and time evolution of Asian summer monsoon have been investigated. A formula for measuring the baroclinicity of the atmosphere has been defined in this paper. By using the observational data, the relationships between the baroclinic mode of the atmosphere and the spacial structure and time evolution of Asian summer monsoon have been investigated. It is pointed out that there exist a strong baroclinic component in wind field during summertime. The time variations of the intensity of baroclinicity in zonal wind are in keeping with the timetable of the movements of monsoon. The area where the baroclinic wind is stronger can be used to determine the monsoon region basically . The horizontal distribution of baroclinicity of meridional wind component and the zonal propagation of baroclinic disturbances in time longitude cross section are both related to subsystems of the Asian summer monsoon regimes.
