This paper discusses the classification of seabed sediment using normally incident, high frequency sound pules. A number of investigators used reflectivity of sound on the sea bottom and some other quantities as features for classification of sediment types. We suggest a new feature which is independent upon reflectivity and roughness of seabed. Our feature is extracted from relative form of echo envelope, it strongly correlates to attenuation of sound in sediments. The attenuation of sound is nearly proportional to frequency and at our frequency (120 kHz) the attenuation in different sediments varies in the range of about tenfold. Therefore we think the attenuation is a good feature for classification. In order to avoid the influence of surface backscattering, we used a directive transducer put near to the bottom. In laboratory a Bayes classifier was carried out by computer, and a fairly high success rate has achieved.

Through the history of navigation of mankind, hydrographic bathymetry is of great importance in respect to the insurance of marine security and the advance of navigation career. In this paper the course of development from dotted to lined and plane sounding technique is reviewed and the recent application of side scan sonar and laser to the bathymetry as well as its limitation is discussed. It is suggested that the concept of the term "seabed" in common use presently is not clear and definite because the seabed in fact consists of a transition zone between the bottom sea water and the deposits, especially in the case of shallow navigable areas and channels, so that it is necessary to propose and clarify the definitions of Lower Datum and Nautical Depths in hydrographic bathymetry. Analysis shows that the bottom boundary of density≥1.2g/cm~3 appears to be the reasonable lower datum level to be accepted, which brings little revision into the water depth notations of open seas and oceans, but is of actual significance for the depth sounding in shallow areas and chanriels. The author suggests that sedimentary acoustical research seems to have been proved as an important direction in further development of the navigational bathymetry science) and the dotted-lined-plane course of development in navigational bathymetry will most likely be repeated.

In this paper, the characteristics of electrochemical cathodic protection used at abroad in oil platform on the sea and seabed oil pipeline as well as its present status and technological abvances are discribed. For sacrificial anode protective system, materials, characteristics and shapes of aluminum ahoy sacrificial anode are emphasized. And the paper also gives emphasis to the developing of new anode materials, the design and installation of sacrificial anode protective system. For impressed current protective system, its technological advances in design and installation are given.
