If there is an excited state of the rare earth icn being studied, which has more than four radiative transitions to the lower states, s can be obtained by least square method, fitting the measured relative intensities with equation(l), In this way, the s of Pr3 + ,Nd3 + ,Sm3 + , Eu3+ and Tb3 + in ZnS may be derived.The emission spectrum of ZnS:Sm3+ has been measured (Fig.1). The main spectral lines are from cubic substitutional Sm3+ center. The lines in the region 18000cm-1-12000cm-1 are identified to be from the transitions 4G5/2-6H5/2, 6H7/2, 6H9/2, 6H11/2 and 6H13/2> The relative intensities are 0.1667, 0.2066, 1.000, 0.0599 and 0.0118. Nonzero magnetic transition rate have been calculated. The best fitting giveswith these s, the transition rates from 4G5/2 to the lower states and their relative intensities have been calculated(Table 1).For the centers with Td symmetry, theoretical calculation has shown that Q2>>6, which agrees with our result. Large 2 value in ZnS is due to partly covalent binding between the rare earth ion and the ligands. It is stronger in ZnS than in typical ionic crystals.
