A scale theory, the concept of u Representative ElementaryArea(REA)", which can represent the dynamic variation of contributing area incatchment runoff production is proposed. In the study of similarity problem, twokinds of commonly used method, statistical similar analysis and dynamic similaranalysis, are introduced and discussed. These can provied a practical method,which is an integration of conceptulization with physics and determination withstochasticism, for simplifying the modelling of scale effect on catchment runoff response.

The remarkable trends of watershed hydrological models are the research of physically distributed based models and the use of Geography Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) technology. The hydrological model integrated with GIS has many advantages, but it does not mean that the model itself is with high quality. The data arrived from RS is difficult to use in hydrological model directly. Study on mechanism of runoff and streamflow has great foreground to build hydrological model coupled with GIS and RS, and hydrological scale problems should always be paid attention to.

With the development of hydrology and the extending effect of mankind on environment, scale issue has become a great challenge to many hydrologists due to the stochasticism and complexity of hydrological phenomena and natural catchments. More and more concern has been given to the scaling issues to gain a large scale (or small scale) hydrological characteristic from a certain known catchments, but hasn't been solved successfully. With the development of hydrology and the extending effect of mankind on environment, scale issue has become a great challenge to many hydrologists due to the stochasticism and complexity of hydrological phenomena and natural catchments. More and more concern has been given to the scaling issues to gain a large scale (or small scale) hydrological characteristic from a certain known catchments, but hasn't been solved successfully. The first part of this paper introduced some concepts about hydrological scale, scale issue and scaling. The key problem is the spatial heterogeneity of catchments and the temporal and spatial variability of hydrological fluxes. Three approaches to scale were put forward in the third part, which were distributed modeling, fractal theory and statistical self similarity analyses. Existing problems and future research directions were proposed in the last part.

介绍了水文尺度、尺度问题和尺度转换的概念 ,重点与难点在流域的空间异质性和水文通量的时空变异性 ;给出了进行尺度转换的 3种途径 ,即分布式水文模拟、分形理论和统计自相似性分析 ;最后在已有成果的基础上 ,提出了目前研究中存在的问题及未来的发展方向 .
