This article describes a new type of radio-frequency metal ion source, which can be operated with gases, liquids and solids. The operating temperature of the ion source may reach 1000℃. Therefore we can extract ion beams of a considerable number of the elements including metal. At present, the ion beams of Al~+, Mg~+, Fe~+, Cr~+, Zn~+, In~+, Ag~+, Cd~+, Sn~+, Sm~+, Hg~+, S~+, P~+, As~+, Se~+, Te~+, etc. have been extracted. The total beam current ranges from several hundred microamperes to...

At present, the ion beams of Al~+, Mg~+, Fe~+, Cr~+, Zn~+, In~+, Ag~+, Cd~+, Sn~+, Sm~+, Hg~+, S~+, P~+, As~+, Se~+, Te~+, etc. have been extracted. The total beam current ranges from several hundred microamperes to the order of milliamperes. The useful fraction of ion in total beam is 70—90%. The life of the source ranges from 40 to more than 100 hours.

After bombarding the Ni(001) surface by an Ar ion beam with primary energy of 500 eV and beam current of 5 μA in the presence of residual nitrogen under a total pressure of 5 × 10-5 torr, we have found a P(2 × 2) structure formed by the adsorption of nitrogen on Ni(001) surface by means of LBED. This is much similar to the structure caused by the adsorption of oxygen or the segregation of carbon with a surface concentration of one quarter monolayer on the same crystal surface. A primary discussion on the nature of nickel-nitrogen bond has been made.
