According to the elastic & plastic theory, calculating formula for the width of chip breaker groove of the throwaway carbide tool bits are developed for correct design & proper selection. From the two examples given, the theoretical results agrecs fairly well with the conclusions derived from practical chip-breaking tests.

Applying these results to a crack-tip of Mode I growing steadily for fhe case of v = 1/2, the asymptotic solution of the stress and strain distribution is obtained. The calculation result shows that the strains possess the Singularity of 1n(A/r) and a secondary plastic zone exists behind the primary plastic zone. The angles of the primary and secondary plastic zones are equal to 111,5° and 18° respectively.
