A novel thin multiple layer metal air cathode with high specific property utility for cylinderical zinc air cell has been invented.It consists of a catalytic active layer, a barrier layer and a current collecting substrate as well as the most important one, a leakage proof sealing layer that attaches other three layers very tightly. With help of the new cathode, the cell can be closed and sealed easily with extremely high reliability of leakage proof characteristic that the traditional three layer air cathode can not do. The prototype of cylinderical AA cell was manufactured and its discharge capacity reached 4.6 Ah with 20 Ω load that was far from that of alkaline manganese cell(only 2.1 Ah).Compared with the sharp slope voltage curve of alkaline manganese cell, zinc air cell had a flat plateau at 1.23 V.The zinc air cell also provided 300 Wh/kg on specific energy,700 Wh/L on energy density and 200 mA on maximum current at 1.10 V as well as no leakage after being over discharged for 24 h. The new cathode can also be used in manufacturing prismatic cell. Along with the commercialized production, cylinderical zinc air cell with the new cathode will potentially replace a significant market share of traditional alkaline manganese cell, especially in the application of pager, walkman/walkman CD and CDMA cellular phone.
