The method of emprical orthogonal functions (EOF) is used to analyze the interannual variations of heat budget at the surface of the western tropical Pacific Ocean during the period of 1961-1974. The computative time coefficient, corresponding to the second eigenvector, has am obviously large interannual oscillation. This result indicates that there is a close relationship between variations in a large-scale pattern of heat flux at the surface of western tropical Pacific Ocean and the El Nino-SO phenomenon. In general, during El Nino, the heat transports from the ocean to the air increase in the central part of the ocean and decrease in the west. But during non-El Nino, the distribution above is just opposite. It is suggested to relate these unusual variations of heat flux to those changes of winds, sea surface temperatures and heat content in this area.

Some features of subsurface thermal state was described on basis of the CTD and XBT data obtained by R/V XIANGYANGHONG 14 and 16 during the period from December 1985 to March 1986, in the Western Tropical Pacific Ocean. In the 1985-1986 winter, the surface layer warm water and the western slope of the thermocline near the equaator was thicker and sharper than in a normal year. The isotherm near 8°N at 130°E section was raising, which showed that the North Equator Current and North Equator countercurr-ent...

In the 1985-1986 winter, the surface layer warm water and the western slope of the thermocline near the equaator was thicker and sharper than in a normal year. The isotherm near 8°N at 130°E section was raising, which showed that the North Equator Current and North Equator countercurr-ent was stronger than during a normal year in the Western Pacific . These characteristics of the thermal state were consistent to that of pre-El-Nino , as described by Wyrtki (1982) et al.

The investigations and monitoring nets of El Nino phenomena and advances in the El Nino studies are introduced comprehensivly. Meanwhile, the problems waiting further study are also pointed out. Besides, the oceanic events during 1986—1987 El Nino are briefed. The study results are obtained based upon the data for four cruises of Sino-US joint air-sea interaction studies in the western Tropical Pacific Ocean together with the data of SST provided by NOAA, US and those of sea level presented by Dr. Wyrtki,...
