A strain of hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacterium isolated from local garden soil by enrichment culture method grew profusely in paraffin oil culture medium. The respiratory quotient of n-hexadecane and n-octadecane were found to be 0.44 and 0.47 respectively.The microbial oxidation of fatty alcohols (C_8-C_(18)) is similar to that of the corresponding alkanes. The rate of oxygen consumption of C_8-C_(18) fatty acids (10~(-3)M Na-salt) is nearly the same. These results may further support the hypothesis that the alkane oxidation most likely passes through the intermediate steps of the corresponding alcohol and fatty acid and finally enters the β-oxidation system.Some aromatic, naphthenic and other related compounds have also been tested.They showed either neglegible oxygen uptake or even suppressed the endogenous respiration.Azide, cyanide, iodoacetate, heavy metals(Hg~(++),Cu~(++), Co~(++))and α,α'-dipyridyl(5×10~(-5)to 5×10~(-3)M) inhibited the oxidation of n-hexadecane as well as n-hexadecyl alcohol to the extent of more than fifty per cent.The mechanism of the hydrocarbon oxidation by this bacterium and the enzyme systems possibly involved were discussed.

The addition of (0.1--0.3) %Sb to the Al--7%Si--0.3% Mg casting alloy(ZL_(101)) resulting in superior tensile strength and elongation of sand castingswithout Na salt modification is described. The work presented shows thatthe technology is simplified and that the quality of castings is markedly raised.The results provide evidence that the silicon particles in the alloy werechanged from acicular to granular by solution heat treatment, thus resultingin the increase of the number of silicon particles and the interface of theirvolume ratio, and the decrease of the average size of silicon particles andthe average spacings between them. Moreover, the porosity and slag inclusionwere decreased and the compound containing iron was refined. The reasonwhy Sb could raise the mechanical properties of Al--7%Si--0.3%Mg castingalloy and improve the quality of products may be obtained.
