    Based upon dislocation theory the stress intensity factors can be calculated. The dislocation density distribution function (?) (x) is easily obtained by solving the integral equation with the Chebyshev polynomials. Some stress intensity factors thus calculated for practical cases have been found to agree fairly well with the results obtained by the conventional fracture mechanics.

    Previous investigations on the application of Chebyshev polynomials in meteorology deal with only the expansion in equidistant grids. By introducing a nonlinear transformation, Chebyshev polynomials are generalized into irregular grids by the author. This transformation is accomplished by replacing the independent variables with thier ordinal numbers.Thirty observational stations over middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang (Yangtze) Eiver are selected. Two dimensional ordinal numbers (ξ1,ξ2)...

Two dimensional ordinal numbers (ξ1,ξ2) are assigned to each station (see Fig. 1 in the text). The distribution of monthly rainfall are expanded by using the expression,where EH denotes the monthly rainfall at the station (i,j). (i, j) are the 2-dimen-sional ordinal of the station, φk(i) φa,(j) normalized Chebyshev polynomials, k and s the orders of the polynomials, Aks,(R) the expansion coefficients, and K0 and 8, the truncation orders of expression (1).The distribution of monthly mean sea surface temperature (SST) is expanded in terms of Chebyshev polynomials to extract its main characteristics. By using expansion coefficients of SST as predictors and that of precipitation as predictands, a series of prediction Eqs. for coefficients Aka(R) are established (e.g. expression (4) in the text). The forecast of Rij can then be evaluated from expression (1).The obtained results indicate that the distribution of precipitation may be fitted reasonably with the method proposed in this paper. For instance, the flood in June, 1954 and drought in June, 1958 over middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang River are fitted satisfactorily. The fittings (Fig. 4(a) and 5(a)) are quite close to the observations (Fig. 4(b) and 5(b)).Finally, it is worth to point out that Chebyshev polynomials do not vary with time and they are suitable for predicting horizontal distribution of meteorological elements.
