In recent years, the contour of piston skirt of medium and high internal combustion engines tends, on its transverse section, to be elliptical, the ellipses changingalong the skirt length, and on its longitudinal section to be barrel-shaped. So thecontour of piston skirt is a complex space curve. The author had not seen any publications about the convincing basic theories, workable design methods and manufacturing processes of the above contour.So the author, basing on elastic stability theory, heat transfer...

So thecontour of piston skirt is a complex space curve. The author had not seen any publications about the convincing basic theories, workable design methods and manufacturing processes of the above contour.So the author, basing on elastic stability theory, heat transfer and fluid dynamic lubrication theories explored the basic theories and design methods. Detailed analysis of the design methods and how these contours change were given. Finally, aset of formulas describing this contour was also given.

In this paper the auther has analyzed eighteen cases of practical interest. The critical condition equations are complicated transcendental equrtions that must be solved for the effective lenghths.Because of the complexity of the equations,a computer program is developed to calculate the effective lengths for any of the eighteen cases.The program is well suited for micro computer. In theauthor's experience it has proved to be a powerful and accurate engineering tool.

In this paper buckling behavior of pressure bar is discussed and its critical condition is defined in mathematics.It makes concept about stability of pressure bar more precise.Otherwise, analogous mathematical description for critical condition of plate buckling shows that this mathematical description has universal meaning in elastic stability theory.

通过对压杆失稳本质的分析和对临界状态的数学描述,使得有关压杆稳定的某些概念更为确切。同时,又对板的压曲临界状态作了类似的数学描述,说明了这种数学描述在弹性稳定性理论中的普遍意义。
