The TM or the PM of different muscles, i. e., the foot, the white and pink adductors of the same animal, were also compared.When care was taken to avoid aggregation or proteolysis, light scattering measurements gave a tentative particle weight of 250,000...

The molecular size, immunochemical specificity and certain features of the primary structure of the foot muscle tropomyosin (TM) of the fresh-water bivalve Cristaria plicata, Leach, were compared with those of the paramyosin (PM) coexisting in the same muscle. The TM or the PM of different muscles, i. e., the foot, the white and pink adductors of the same animal, were also compared.When care was taken to avoid aggregation or proteolysis, light scattering measurements gave a tentative particle weight of 250,000 for foot muscle PM. While there was discrepancy between this value and that deduced from sedimentation-viscosity measurements, 190,000, the data were sufficient in differentiating PM from TM of the same muscle when for this latter protein the same two techniques yielded respectively 66,000 and 54,000. The molecular weights of the TM from the white adductor and foot muscles were identical.TM and PM were immunochemically unrelated and the fingerprints of the two proteins were different. However, the three TMs or the three PMs were closely similar, if not identical.It was found that 67% chloroethanol caused a disaggregation of the PM molecule into subunits, the size of which fell, curiously enough, within the range of that of the TM.Bearing in mind the main structural features and disregarding the details, it appears that TM and PM are closely similar in regard to the amino acid composition and the secondary and tertiary structures and markedly different in regard to the primary and quaternary structures. The similarities and differences in the various properties of TM and PM are readily understandable in terms of these structural characteristics. Pending further investigations on the localization and the function of TM and PM, one is led to think that TM and PM are probably two different kinds of protein.

The cause of this anisotropy was supposed to be due to the magnetoelastic coupling between positive magnetostriction and internal stress in the specimen.After the samples were annealed or magnetically annealed, the domain of this type decreased in amount as the annealing temperature increased, while the value of the susceptibility and that of the remanent magnetization were increased.A limited amount of fingerprint type "maze-pattern" domain was also observedon the surface of amorphous Fe_(40)Ni_(40)P_(14)B_6 alloy.The stress effect on the domain structure was quite obvious. We observed the domain structure around a pin hole made by a needle and a seam made by scissors.
