This method needs much less computer storage and computer time of analysis than the conventional Finite Element Method.

This technique is adopted in the present work, revealing a strain pattern in Huiyu Syncline which shows a nearly horizontal south-north compression with a nearly horizontal west-east extension. The types of strain ellipsoids change from constricted through plane-strain to flattened accordingly as the spots move from the limbs in the near-hinge zone to the core of the syncline. The general strain levels (measured with parameter εs) at different spots are quite similar even though the compression levels (measured with the relative length of the minimum axis of the strain ellipsoid) become higher from the limbs to the core. Finally an attempt is made to explain the difference of the orientation of the maximum principal axis of the strain ellipsoid from that of the hinge of the syncline as resulted from the stages of the regional deformation.

Since 1982, Ni, Davis et al.have developed a time-dependent finite volume method combined with multiple -grid technique. It is an explicit scheme by which a steady state solution can be obtained rapidly. This paper adopts the method to compute the transonic flow field through plane cascades. First, elementary ideas and treatment principles of Ni-Davis scheme are clarified. The numerical treatments on solid wall boundary are then improved. The artificial viscous terms used are stated. With numerical tests, an improved algorithm for multiple -grid technique is presented. Finally, two examples of transonic flow fields through plane cascades are described. The computational accuracy and efficiency of numerical results are acceptable for aerodynamic design of aero-engine. Computing a steady state solution on a 65 x 17 grid takes about 15 minutes CPU time on IBM 4341 computer. With multiple-grid scheme, the savings in CPU time is about 50% to 60%.
