The profile morphology of the mud coast is closely related to coastal dynamics. The study of the profile development, conpled with the analysis of sediment provenance, helps us to understand coastal dynmics and predict the coast evolution. The purpose of this paper is, through the case study of Jiangsu's mud coast, to understand the characteristics of the mud coast profile, recognize the factors affect ing the profile development, and reveal tha relations between the profile morphology and the coast...

The profile morphology of the mud coast is closely related to coastal dynamics. The study of the profile development, conpled with the analysis of sediment provenance, helps us to understand coastal dynmics and predict the coast evolution. The purpose of this paper is, through the case study of Jiangsu's mud coast, to understand the characteristics of the mud coast profile, recognize the factors affect ing the profile development, and reveal tha relations between the profile morphology and the coast evolution. The profile of Jiangsu's mud coast is of two types: (1) The tide dominated profile of the accumlative coast: and (2)the wave dominated profile of the erosive coast. The mudflat of Jiangsu can be divided into four zones from higher water level to lower water level, i.e. the grass flat, themud flat, the mixed flat and the sand-silt flat. The profile of the accumulative coast is characterized by a gentle slops ande and "a double convexity in shape", i.e. morphological convexities presented on mixed flats and lower sand-silt flats respetively. The convexity on mixed flats is produced by sedimentary processes. The relation among the slope at a point on the profile after a unit time span of accumulation, tgα', the deposition rate, D, and original slope, tgα, is t_zα′=t_zα+(D)/L) Usually the highest deposition rate occurs on mixed flats. Therefore, mixed flats can be divided into two parts by the point at which the deposition rate is the highest(i.e. where D/L=0). The landward part should become gentler because D/L and tgα are of inverse signs. And the seaward part should become steeper because D/L and tgα are of the same sign. This leads to the convexity on mixed flats. Hydrological survey shows that the maximum sediment concentration of sea water is also on mixed flats corresponding with the distribution fo deposition rate. The remarkableness of the convexity is determined by the sediment supply The relation among the slope, velocity and the water level change rate on tidal flats is Only where the muddy deposit is thick can dh/dt be large, giving large tgα'. And the thick muddy deposit implies a copious argillaceous sediment supply. These indicate that the more copious the argillaceous sediment supply, the greater the slope the boundary of muddy-sandy deposits and therefore the more remarkable the convexity on mixed flats. The convxity on the lower silt-sand flat is due to the joining of the flat surface and the side bank of subtidal channels which hasa steeper slope. The profile of the erosinal coast is similar to that of the equilibrium profile on the sandy coast. But it is always linked with the coast dynamics of erosion. The evolution of the erosive profile begins when the sediment supply is cut off. Firstly the lower part of tidal flats is subject to ebb current erosion Then the whole profile is eroded by both ebb currents andwaves. And finally wave action becomes dominant Hence the formation of the profile described above.

The Wangtan harbour-site of Hebci province is located in the middle section of the Luanhe River delta plain coast, and is typical of the sand barrier-lagoon coast in China. By investigation and study of the coastal dynamics, geomorphology, and sedimentology in the area, the conclusions read as follows: (1)There is broad and plain land area and good conditions of water depth for harbour construction at the harbour-site. (2)The sand barriers from the Luanhe River mouth to Caofeidian were products of the transverse movement of sediment carried by the river into the Bohai Sea since the middle Holocene period. It indicates that the transverse movement of sediment is stronger than the longshore movement. The movement belt of sediment is within 5m water depth; with water depth of more than 7m the sediment of the sea bottom is stable. Near Wangtan harbour-site, the net rate of sandy drift from NE to SW is about 4.1-7.5×10~4 m~3/Yr. (3)Because the sediment carried by the Luanhe River into the sea has greatly reduced since 1970's, the coast of the harbour-site has been slightly eroded. (4)It is suitable to build a harbour at Wangtan harbour-site. The moles of the harbour should be encircled and the head of the moles should be extended to about 5m isobath with a gate towards SSE. The harbour pond could be excaved landward.
