An artificial diversion was carried out in July 1996 near Cha 1 of the Yellow River Delta in order to stabilize the present channel and protect delta environments.The integration of actual land investigation and remote sensing is an efficient method to study river mouth evolution and sediment transport.The new river mouth expanded rapidly seaward at an average speed of 1 75 km/a during 1996~1998.Sediment concentration changed in a regular space time way after high content of fluvial silt delivering to the sea in flood periods.The sediment rich water mass did not disperse immediately.On the contrary,it formed a high sediment concent muddy flow.The flow spanned as wide as about 3 km horizontally and as deep as from seabed to surface vertically.The sediment concentration in the central flow,with a maximum of 30 kg/m 3,was greater than those in both sides.Temporally the sediment concentration changed periodically with tide.The surface suspended sediment transported to southeast,and bottom and middle suspended sediment to northwest.This phenomenon was corroborated by Landsat TM data.The intermediate and bottom suspended sediments have played a dominant role in new river mouth sedimentation.Firstly,they have been the main feedstock for this sedimentation.Secondly,their transport direction has governed the progradation of river mouth and the subaqueous slope.The transport direction of muddy flow has been decided by the combined effect of fluvial flow strength,tide and topography in the mouth.Spring tide was the pivotal period to form the mouth bar.The superposition of fluvial and tidal currents during ebb tide was northwesterly and causes sediment to disperse seaward.

1 996年 7月为稳定现有流路和保护三角洲环境 ,通过人工疏浚 ,黄河经汊 1入海。现场实测和卫星遥感研究表明 ,1 996~ 1 998年新入海河口以 1 .75 km/a的速度向海淤进。黄河洪水期入海后形成高含沙量的泥沙流 ,其范围水平方向延伸约 3km宽 ,垂直方向则从海底到海面。该泥沙流中部含沙量最高可达30 kg/m3 ,高于两边 ,且泥沙流含沙量随潮周期变化。实测表明 ,表层沙偏东南运移 ,而中层和底层沙则偏西北运移。这一现象已为 Landsat TM资料所证实。中层和底层沙控制新河口的沉积 ,涨潮时段是形成河口沙坝的重要阶段。
