Intracellular recording of horizontal progressive motion sensitive cells and regressive motion sensitive cells have been made from ipsilateral neurons in the left optic lobe and brain of worker honeybees. Horizontal proressive motion sensitive cells are excited and depolarized by ipsilatera] progressive motion but are inhibited and hyperpolarized by ipsilateral regressive motion. During stimuli to right eye only, the frequencies are independent on movement. Horizontal discharge regressive motion sensitive cells are strongly excited and depolarized by ipsilateral regressive motion, and upon depolarizations spike discharges are superimposed. Ipsilateral progressive motion has little effect on it. Other horizontal movement directionally seletive cells with and without spikes have been recorded. Directionally seletive cells with spikes was strongly excited by progressive movement over the left eye alone. No synaptic potentials were recorded in these cells. Some cells sensitive to horizontal movement but with no spike were also recorded.
