The thermal expansion behaviour of cordierite based glass-ceramics containing TiO_2has been researched. In such glass-ceramics, there are a large amount of crystalline phaseand a little glass phase, wherein the cordierite is an essential phase. Besidesthere are also rutile and magnesium aluminium titanate solid solution. Since the crystalspossess anisotropic in nature of thermal expansion in cooling process during crystallizedtreatment, it would produce internal microcracks due to the action of thermal stress....

The thermal expansion behaviour of cordierite based glass-ceramics containing TiO_2has been researched. In such glass-ceramics, there are a large amount of crystalline phaseand a little glass phase, wherein the cordierite is an essential phase. Besidesthere are also rutile and magnesium aluminium titanate solid solution. Since the crystalspossess anisotropic in nature of thermal expansion in cooling process during crystallizedtreatment, it would produce internal microcracks due to the action of thermal stress. Bymeans of stress calculating formula, the cause of the microcracks formation has been studi-ed. Such microcracks may be represented by a hysteresis loop between the heating and coo-ling curves, which can be measured by a dilatometer. The experimental results revealed that there exists a function correlation between theincrement in microcracks and experimental temperature, and it may be represented by anempirical formula, y = ae~(bx). Finally, by use of SEM, the locations and sizes of microcrackswere observed and analysed.

Five phases were determined by means of quantitative EPMA, SEM, X-ray diffraction, etc. in the high Ti-slag with high Mg and Ca contents, smelted by 6000 kVA electric furnace. The principal phase is the anosovite solid solution of Ti_3O_5 type in amount of 87.06% of the slag. Along the grain interfaces of the solid solution phase, CaO concentrated mainly in the form of 2CaO·TiO_2. This is the phase area so called the crystal phase enriched Ca and Mg. Most MgO is collected in the glass phase which is about 10.90%...
