This paper introduce a method to translate digital map to PDF file. At first, on the base of PostScript symbol library, the digital map is described by PostScript Operators and translated to PS file. Then, the PS file is translated to PDF file by Acrobat Distiller.
The structure of EPS file format and the methods to import an EPS file into a PS file, as well as related PostScript instructions, are discussed in this paper. Based on this discussion, the principle and methods of assembling or imposing pages are explained in detail. A software running on the Windows platform to impose pages has been written.

Both GIS software and cartographic software have their own symbol libraries, but few of them take the characteristics of the map publish into account. The paper introduces the construction method of the symbol library in the digital publish system based on the description of the key technologies, design of symbol editing software, the link of symbol and attributes library, color transition from the RGB color space to CMYK color space, layer separation of map publish, and creation of PS file.
