The development of thermoregulation in nestlings of Eastern Quail,Coturnix c japonica Temminck et Schlegel(Family:Phasianidae)is discussed,together with the effect of ambient temperature to body temperature and energy expenditure of their adults.Resting metabolic rates of adult birds under different ambient temperatures,one of which with lowest at 25℃,is an U-shaped curve(Fig.1),Their normal body temperature is 41.52±0.40℃.Therefore,ambient temperature of 25~30℃ are the possible optimum range for rearing adult birds. The nestlings exhibited poikilothermy,yet they belong to precocial birds,develop into homeothermy around 20~21 days of age. At 20℃ and 35℃,the nestlings' resting metabolic rates shows three "age phase"(Fig.2):First,0~7 days,the rates are positive related to age.Second,7~11 days,negative related to age.Third,ll~30 days,the rates maintained a steady level. The nestlings' resting metabolism rates are higher at 20℃ than at 35℃.The nestlings are able to save a lot of unnecessary energy expenditure if they are reared under warm surroundings.

The results showed that amount of food intake was 32.4g ind-1·day-1 in the common teal, 54.9 g ind-1·day-1 in the shoveller and 80.2 g ind-1·day-1 in the spotbill duck . Comparison between 1963 and 1983, the mean body weight of the common teal in 1983 decreased by 20%, the mean body weight of the spotbill duck in 1983 decreased by 12%.It is suggested that the Taihu lake ecosystemsytem was influenced by unsuitable treatment.Regression equations of existence metabolism on body weight was obtained in the autumn, winter and spring. The equations of regression are M = 3.3304W0.6488 in autumn, M = 4.046W0.5775 in the winter and M = 2.302 W0.0591 in the spring (M:kcal ind-1·day-1, W:g) .Comparison between existence metabolism and resting metabolism showed that energy used in activity and production in the wintei was lower than that in the autumn and spring.The ducks winter under sharply cold and food scarcity winter by increased plumage insulation and fat deposits in the body,decreasing energy consumption for activity and production.
