By analyzing the importance and current situation of teaching Chinese characters and terms in high schools, and in the light of some related theories in pedagogics, psychology and linguistics, this paper points out that teaching of Chinese characters and terms has been misled when it comes to treating the following aspects: concept of teaching, of teaching the role of characters and expressions, the relationship between semantic objectivity and subjectivity, and the relationship between semantics and context. The author believes the key to improving teaching of Chinese characters and terms lies in teachers' heightening their competence of language, of language carefully exploring the psychology high school students, students seeking the art of teaching,and nurturing students' creative thinking ability and good reading habit.

The reason why the main meaning of the commonly used words can not be explained precisely and why the mistaken words remain the same is explained, the concrete meaning and the feasibility of teaching Chinese charactre literacy through association of the word form and its meaning by analyzing the link and the rule between the form, sound and meaning is discussed, and the experimental proposition is presented...
