Teaching English with the assistance of the multimedia CD ROMs and the overhead projector distinguishes itself from the traditional practice in English teaching. At the same time, this new methodology differs greatly from the ‘one to one’ interactive multimedia computer assisted language learning. In essence, the use of multimedia overhead projector in language classrooms is an extension of means for traditional classroom teaching, not a revolutionary progress in teaching methodology, for all the activities are still under the teachers direct control. Ignorance of the distinctions between the two will probably hinder the effectiveness of the multimedia materials and may lead to the further strengthening of teacher centeredness. The article not only attempts to trace the current theories of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) and apply them to the teaching practice with CD ROMs, but also provides strategies for using this new technology in language teaching.
