The study of English teaching methodology is in fact that of input and output of English language in English learners. It is proposed in this paper that the input which best encourages learners thinking in English is most desirable, input alone cannot lead to oral English competence, and output exercises should be devised in the way that they benefit the cultivation of learners English abilities both in carrying out speech plan and in making speech plan.

When they speak English, they focus more on the fluency and grammatical correctness but less on the appropriateness of their oral English. The paper lists the four common problems with the appropriateness of college students' oral English, then classifies them into pragmalinguistic failure and sociopragmatic failure...

Oral English is becoming increasingly important in today's society. However, college students still have misunderstandings on oral English competence. When they speak English, they focus more on the fluency and grammatical correctness but less on the appropriateness of their oral English. The paper lists the four common problems with the appropriateness of college students' oral English, then classifies them into pragmalinguistic failure and sociopragmatic failure and analyses the causes of the pragmatic failure briefly. Finally, the paper theoretically proves that the development of students' pragmatic competence is necessary for the improvement of their communicative competence.
