A combined apparatus with multifunction of chemisorption measurement, H2-O2 titration, TPD, TPR, and pulse reaction technique has been set up and has been used to investigate the characteristics of TiO2 and TiO2 supported platinum catalyst from the viewpoint of "strong metal-support interaction" (SMSI).Two TPD peaks (I and II) of hydrogen (Fig. 1) appeared at lower and higher temperatures respectively could be observed on Pt/TiO2 reduced at a temperature lower than 400℃. The peak I disappeared when "strong interaction" happened, i. e. after Pt/TiO2 was treated at 550℃ and under H2 atmosphere and became unable of adsorbing hydrogen at room temperature. Therefore, the appearance or disappearance of peak I in TPD diagram could be used to characterize the disengagement or engagement of SMSI. It was interesting to notice that the peak Ⅱ always appeared either in the first or in the successive TPD measurements after the Pt/TiO2 was treated in H2 at high temperature. This peak was at first the inevitable result related to the ability of TiO2 carrier in storing an appreciable amount of hydrogen diffused into the bulk-phase with the surface platinum sites acted as the entrance "gate". In addition, it was argued that the SMSI effect was unseparably connected with the amount of hydrogen present in the bulk or in the surface layer. This point of view was supported by a variety of experimental facts, for example, when a Pt/TiO2 catalyst formerly reduced at low temperature was TPD-ed to a higher temperature in argon, there happened a significant extent of SMSI effect as shown by the decrease of room-temperature-hydrogen-adsorption and the lower height of peak I in the immediate IPD measurement, this clearly showed that the hydrogen initially stored in the low temperature reduced Pt/TiO2 sample was operative in inducing the SMSI effect by reheating the sample to a higher temperature. As a second example, it was found that a sample with SMSI became gradually capable of adsorbing hydrogen if it was subjected to successive TPD experiments from room temperature to 550℃, so as to remove off appreciably the stored amount of hydrogen. In conclusion, it was verified that the presence of hydrogen in the surface of Pt/TiO2 catalyst must play an important role in the initiation or maintenance of SMSI effect. A schematic representation of the mechanism of SMSI effect was suggested.

The results show that the desulfurization sorbents demonstrate the best sulfidation and regeneration behaviors in term of chemical reactivity, attrition resistance and sulfur capacity (accumulative sulfur capacity 300.49%) over 1?200 hours. Sulfided sorbent can be completely regenerated with 1%~3% O_2 in aqueous vapour. These conclusions will be used in the industrial development processes.
