Since the observed clouds cannot last forever, there must be a problem about the lifetime of molecular clouds, which is debated at present. It is necessary to have further theoratical study and observational evidence, This paper presents a result about the observational study of the mean lifetime of molecular clouds. A statistical equilibrium model of cloud growth via cloud-cloud collisions (Kwan 1979) is adopted for the study. The condition of an approximate analytical solution to the equation of the changing rate of the number of clouds per unit volume with mass m is that those clouds gain mass mostly by accreting much smaller clouds. In this model a dependence between the growth time τ and the mass increase α in a cloud of cross section σ_0 by accretion from a medium of average density<ρ> and velocity ν_0 is given. The analysis is based on the l-v map which is synthesized by 244 spectra of the J=1—0 rotational transition of ~(13)CO isotope made at 3' intervals along the galactic equator between l=27.°85 and l=40.°00. The half-power beam width of the NRAO 11-m telescope at the rest frequency(110.2GHz) is 66". Measurement of characteristic chord lengths from Fig. 1 is made. Features were measured only if both they have a peak central intensity greater than 0.4 K and are at ν>20kms~(-1), the total number is 375. From the observational distribution function of cloud chords the cloud diameters distribution, furthermore the mass spectrum are inferred. And the cloud mass at which mass distribution function peaks, as well as the mass increase in the cloud's lifetime are obtained then. Combining with the spatially smoothed number density and the individual cloud number density etc. based on our ~(13)CO data, a lower limit of the mean lifetime of interstellar clouds is derived. In addition, discussion and comparison with results by Kwan(1979), Solomon, Sanders and Scoville(1979) and Scoville and Hersh(1979) are also made. Values of the lifetime calculated through these different ways with our data are much the same (see Table 3). CONCLUSIONS: 1. The mass of those clouds which constitute most fraction of the interstellar matter in galactic plane is 8×10~5M_☉. 2. Most of the interstellar matter is in clouds of mass between 4×10~4M_☉ and 4×10~6 M_☉. The mean mass of interstellar molecular clouds is 2×10~5M_☉. 3. In the process of cloud growth via cloud-cloud collisions the timescale of growth in which these clouds constitute the most fraction of the interstellar matter is a factor 3 of the period in which molecular clouds reach their mean mass. 4. With the mass spectrum of clouds based on ~(13)CO observations the lower limit of the mean lifetime of interstellar clouds is obtained, which is 1×10~9 years.
