The oriental literature and the oriental literary spirit have always aimed at"the harmony of the whole world". The Chinese"Oneness of god and man"; the Indian"Oneness of budda and self"; the Japanese"forest thought" are all what the oriental literature pursuing after. The"witch craft literary spirit"of early ancient times; the "religious spirit"and "national spirit"of mid & near ancient times; the"anti--imperialism and anti-feudalism" of modern literature; the "anticolonalism and...

The oriental literature and the oriental literary spirit have always aimed at"the harmony of the whole world". The Chinese"Oneness of god and man"; the Indian"Oneness of budda and self"; the Japanese"forest thought" are all what the oriental literature pursuing after. The"witch craft literary spirit"of early ancient times; the "religious spirit"and "national spirit"of mid & near ancient times; the"anti--imperialism and anti-feudalism" of modern literature; the "anticolonalism and anti-hedgemony" of comtempory literature all moved to the goal of "harmony of the world", "harmony of humanity" . It's quite different from the western tradition of "conquer". it was only after the disastrous two world wars","harmony of the west began to cast their eyesight to the east. The oriental literature since modern times(since the two world waxs)has paid close attention to every move of western literature. The oriental literature went so far as to imitate and introduce their developed system of art techniques. When it has been found that much of the western literature has absorbed nutrition from the east, and took the oriental"oneness of god and man"as their fervent pursuit, they began to self-examine the rich oriental tradition. They found that, literature, after the stages of"natural being"and "social being"would inevitably move into the stage of "spiritual being". The "harmony of humanity" and the "oneness of god and man" are the core part of the firm pursuit of the "spiritual beings". Hereafter, the development of both eastern and western literature moves to a common goal. This tendency seems to be more obvious at the turn of the 20th century. The frequent visits of the Nobel prize winners of literature to the east suggest and predict the promising tendency of oriental literature and the inevitable renaissance of art.

东方文学与东方文学精神历来以“整个世界的和谐”为指归。中国的“天人合一”,印度的“梵我合一”,日本的“森林思想”历来都是东方文学追求的理想境界。无论是上古文学的“巫术”精神,中古文学的“宗教”精神,近古文学的“民族”精神,近代文学的“反帝、反封”,现当代文学的“反殖、反霸”,无不以“世界和谐”、“人性和谐”为目标,且与一味讲“征服”的西方大异其趣。“二战”后,西方才开始把眼光投向东方。当发现很多西方文学大家都频频向东方文学吸取养分,并把东方的“天人合一”理想作为他们的执着追求的时候,东方文学也开始对厚重的东方传统进行自我审视。他们发现文学在经历了“自然性的人”、“社会性的人”的阶段后,不可避免地要走向“精神性的人”的阶段。而“人性和谐”、“天人合一”也正是“精神性的人”执意追求的核心特质。

Mr Xu Dishan was man of special character.In him,there existed at the same time outstandingly a spirit of three aspects.As a scholar and social activist he possessed a precious scientific democratic spirit;as a man of letter s,he tried his best to express the spirit of humanism;as a “healthy social bein g” he possessed richly the religious spirit.These should not be neglected when one studies his thinking and works.

许地山在二十世纪的中国文坛上,是一个最富有特殊性的人物。在他的身上,突出地并存着三种精神。作为学者、社会活动家,他具有极其宝贵的科学民主精神;作为文学家,他在自己的创作中竭力表现人本主义精神;作为“极健全的社会人”,他尤其具有宗教情怀、宗教精神。这些是我们研究他的思想和创作所不应忽视的。
