Several features of the premonitory anomalous variations of the mean velocity ratio of the P and S seismic waves (VP0 /Vs0 ) before the Yongshan(永善)- Daguan(大关) earthquake (M = 7.1) in Yunnan Province on May 11, 1974 are found: (1)The VP0 /Vs0 ratio had a conspicuous decrease for a duration of about 8 years and 5 months before the occurrence of the earthquake. Several features of the premonitory anomalous variations of the mean velocity ratio of the P and S seismic waves (VP0 /Vs0 ) before the Yongshan(永善)- Daguan(大关) earthquake (M = 7.1) in Yunnan Province on May 11, 1974 are found: (1)The VP0 /Vs0 ratio had a conspicuous decrease for a duration of about 8 years and 5 months before the occurrence of the earthquake. (2) The ratio reached the same maximum value both at the beginning and the end of the anomalous period. (3) After a long-period of decrease, the ratio in a large region around the epicenter started to increase again first in the peripheral area of that region, then gradually towards the epicentral area. (4) All earthquakes with M ≥ 5 in the region occurred near the beginning and the end of the anomalous period and with each such event having its corresponding to a velocity ratio increase of short duration. (5) Certain correlations seem to exist between the orientation of the region of the anomalous velocity ratio and the source mechanism of the Yongshan - Daguan earthquake. A discussion of the re-sults as well as their application in earthquake prediction has also been made.

本文简要地给出了1974年5月11日云南省永善—大关7.1级强震前(?)、(?)波平均速度比V_(p0)V_(s0)前兆异常变化的一些主要特性:(1)7.1级强震前八年零五个月期间波速比V_(p0)/V_(s0)明显减小;(2)V_(p0)/V_(s0)在异常过程开始之前达到一个极大值,在异常过程结束时又取同样的极大值;(3)经过长时期、大面积的减小之后,波速比V_(p0)/V_(s0)先在距震中较远的地区内回升,然后才在震中区内回升;(4)5级以上地震都发生在异常过程的初期及末期,且各自对应着波速比的临时短期增大;(5)波速异常区的定向与强震的震源机制间有一定的对应关系。文章对所得结果作了一些简单的讨论,并指出了在地震预报中的应用。

In this paper, the data of 147 earthquakes occurred before and after the Haicheng Earthquake of February 4, 1975, M = 7.3 have been analysed. The results obtained, indicate that before the main shock, anomalous variations of the velocity ratio Vp/Vs was quite obvious. Its values began to fall at first and then recovered. This negative anomaly of Vp/Vs seems to have been started at least 4 years ago. Maximum negative value of Vp/Vs can reach about 10% of its normal. Nearly 10 months after the conclusion...

In this paper, the data of 147 earthquakes occurred before and after the Haicheng Earthquake of February 4, 1975, M = 7.3 have been analysed. The results obtained, indicate that before the main shock, anomalous variations of the velocity ratio Vp/Vs was quite obvious. Its values began to fall at first and then recovered. This negative anomaly of Vp/Vs seems to have been started at least 4 years ago. Maximum negative value of Vp/Vs can reach about 10% of its normal. Nearly 10 months after the conclusion of the anomaly, the main shock took place. Before the main event, the area occupied by the anomaly was quite large, while only in a small region around the earthquake source area, negative anomaly of the velocity ratio suddenly appeared immediately before the main shock, at a time when the value of Vp/Vs increased to the normal. Before the main event, the variation in the S-wave velo-city was not appreciable. However, P-wave velocity and its virtual velocity showed anomalous changes. About two months before an aftershock of magnitude 4.8, the value of Vp/Vs also appeared to be anomalous.Eight explosion records were also analysed, but no apparent velocity ratio anomaly was observed.As regards to the cause of the velocity ratio anomaly, we merely suppose that under the action of concentrated tectonic stress, rocks change in their elastic property and numerous microfractures are formed.

In the present paper, time and spatial variations of the average dislocation (F) for intermediate and small earthquakes before and after five large earthquakes, the Tangshan (唐山), Yongshan (永善), Zhongdian (中甸), Xingtai (邢台), Haicheng (海城) Earthquakes, have been discussed. The results show that the time interval and spatial dimension of the anomalous variations of spectra of waves from such earthquakes are both related to the magnitudes of the main shocks, which appear to be greater the greater the time interval find spatial dimension of the anomalous variations of the wave spectra. The time interval is 52 months and spatial dimension 400 km for the Tangshan Earthquake of magnitude Ms= 7.8, while that for the Zhongdian Earthquake of magnitude Ms = 6.4 are 8 months and 110 km respectively. It is supposed that such a result may be helpful in the understanding of the physical process of the development of a large earthquake.
