Diagnostic analyses show there obviously exist two correlation patterns between 500 hPa height field and arctic ice cover in region II(110 20°W) during the northern hemisphere cold season (Nov. Apr.). The two patterns are associated with the atmospheric forcing. One is NAO or WA teleconnection structure. When WA index is negative, the arctic ice cover in region II is expanded; and vice versa. This structure is the strongest, when atmosphere leads the arctic ice cover in region II by one month....

Diagnostic analyses show there obviously exist two correlation patterns between 500 hPa height field and arctic ice cover in region II(110 20°W) during the northern hemisphere cold season (Nov. Apr.). The two patterns are associated with the atmospheric forcing. One is NAO or WA teleconnection structure. When WA index is negative, the arctic ice cover in region II is expanded; and vice versa. This structure is the strongest, when atmosphere leads the arctic ice cover in region II by one month. It is basically the contribution of the relatively high frequency fluctuations of atmosphere. By comparison, these features above are analogous to that of air sea interaction in mid latitude of the Atlantic during cold season. There fore, the atmosphere plays a leading role in both ice air and sea air interaction in the Atlantic during cold seaon. The structure of the other pattern has two features. Firstly, it bears the opposite tendency between mid latitude and high, low latitude regions. Secondly, the strong centers of action are located on the mean troughts and ridges in cold season. The second pattern has the variation period with 3 4 years. When the meridional circulation in the mid latitude strengthens, the arctic ice cover in region II is expanded, and vice versa. It is the strongest when atmosphere leads the arctic ice cover in region II by 1 2 months.

北半球500hPa高度场与北极Ⅱ区(110°w~20°w)海冰面积之间在冬半年存在两种相关结构.一种结构是NAO或WA遥相关型,且主要是大气相对较高频的贡献,其特征十分相似于冬半年大西洋中纬度地区的海气相互作用特征.另一种结构具有中纬度与高、低纬地区呈相反变化趋势,活动中心分布在冬半年平均槽脊位置上的基本特征,且存在3~4a的低频变化周期.这一结构与贝加尔湖高脊的扰动变异关系密切.
