In contrast to the traditional FACTS controllers, IPCs can be constructed by conventional elements instead of power electronic devices. The active power flow is nearly constant over a wide range of generator angle across the IPC due to its inherent power flow control characteristics. Furthermore, the tuned IPCs have the unique properties such as effective restriction of short circuit currents and the mutuol independence of voltages at their terminals. In this paper the basic characteristics of the IPC are expounded, then the influence of the line impedance in series with the IPC upon the tuned IPC's performance is analyzed in detail. Finally, the two problems, i.e., the insufficient synchronizing capacity and the excessive over voltage, are qualitatively analyzed when the tuned IPCs are applied to the practical power systems.
