The mechanism of failure of The exhaust valves of internal combustion engine with domestic fuels and typical working parameters made by 21—4N and 4Cr10 Si2Mo steel was investigated with metallographic, SEM, X-ray diffration and electron probe methods. Especially~ the mophology, composition and the destruction process under cyclic stress of the surface corrosion protection layer were examined. Exhaust valves of both gasoline and Diesel engine are damaged by combine gas corrosion and fatigue stress, which caused the formation of pits. Experiments show that a surface treatment process forming a protective coating prevents the pit-formation and extends the service lives in se veral folds. The application of a type PSR-1 alloy coating by special coating equipment VF-79 can furnish economically very good anti-corrosion and antiwear properties service tests in land, river and sea transports pcove that this coating is good for both gasoline and Diesel engine valves and performs better than hard surfacing. This process has been commercialized recently.

Objective.Experimental investigation on the laser irradiation treatment of Ni-based superalloy GH37 has been done in order to improve the surface properties of machine parts made from GH37.As a preliminary aspect of the research works on improving hot corrosion resistance of GH37,test results of the remelt under laser irradiation and the solidification of alloy surface are reported in this paper.Gas corrosion and accelerated oxidation tests have beenperformed for laser-irradiated specimens in contrast with those unirradiated.Sectional structures of specimens before and after corrosion tests have been observed by microscopic examination,TEM,SEM and x-ray spectrum analysis,and x-ray diffraction test and EMPA are applied to analyze the layer composition due to corrosion.GH37 is one type of Ni-lECr-5W-3Mo-2Al-2Ti superalloy with γ-Ni3(Al,Ti) phase precipitation-hardened.After remelting under CO2 laser beam of 1KW output and solidifying thereafter,it is observed that a layer 0.5mm thick of cellular dentrite structure is formed in alloy surface.In such a structure,the great portion of TiC in initial grains have been in solution,and γ and M23C6 phases have been reprecipitated as finer particles within grains or along grain boundaries,thus curving and thinning the grain boundaries,and also reducing the average grain size to 0.089mm from 0.182mm.As a result of the fine-grained structure of surface layer,the important corrosion-resistant element Cr diffuses across grain boundaries into the outer surface and tends to form a protective cover of Cr2O3 preventing both O2 and S diffuse inward and metallic ions diffuse outward such that the corrosion behavior can be depressed.Ti is a kind of corrosion-resistant element as well and so the TiC solid solutions are favourable to improve the hot corrosion resistance of alloy surface.Tests of gas corrosion at 900℃ and of accelerated oxidation with Na2SO4 coated specimens show that the surface layers of irradiated specimens have better ability to resist hot corrosion in contrast with those unirradiated.Microscopic cross-section photos also show the firm bonding between irradiated surface layer and base material.In conclusion,the remelted-solidifying surface layer irradiated by laser beam may be regarded as an effective coat that belongs to the superalloy itself.Tab.1 Width (W) and depth (d) of depletion layer of GH37 after gas corrosion test at 900℃(specimens A-unirradiated: B-irradiated)Fig.1 Width (w) and depth (d)of depletion layer of GH37 after accelerated oxidation test with Na2SO4 coated specimens (A-unirradiated B-irradiated) Al,B1:av.width; A2,B2:av.depth A3,B3 max.depth Photo 1 Sectional structure of sur-ace flayer after remelting-solidifying treatment by CO2 laser beamPhoto 2 SEM sectional structure (×1000) and element's distributions ofunirradiated specimen after gas corrosion Photo 3 SEM sectional structure (×1000) and elements distribution ofirradiated specimen after gas corrosion Photo 4 Sectional structure of surface layer (×600) of Na2SO4 coatedspecimens after accelerated oxidation test (900℃,85hr),a)unirradiated,b) irradiated.Photo 5 Sectional structure of surface layer (×600) after gas corrosiontest (900℃,75hr),a) unirradiated,b) irradiated.

用输出功率为1KW的C0_2激光束将GH37合金表面熔化-凝固处理后,形成了0.5mm厚的树枝胞状晶组织。其中,原晶粒内的大量TiC被固溶,γ′相及M_(23)C_6相重新以更细小的颗粒,分别析出于晶内与晶界;晶粒的平均直径由原来的0.182mm减小到0.089mm。激光辐照后的表层组织,经900℃下的燃气腐蚀及涂Na_2SO_4的加速氧化试验后,同未经激光辐照的试样相比,表现出良好的抗热腐蚀性能。
