A cavity underlies this region and communicates with the lateral ventricle beingcovered Iaterally by a thickened membrane about 4×0.8 cm in area. Most of the front-al, parietal and temporal lobes and the whole occipital lobe are present. The left pyramidal tract is undeveloped. Compensatory hypertrophy is shown byvarious central structures such as the right pyramidal tract (together with the aberrantpyramidal bundles), and the extrapyramidal gray masses-lenticular, caudate and sub-thalamic nuclei and substantia nigra. In the cerebellar system, the brachium conjunc-tivum on the left side and the red nucleus and the inferior olivary nucleus on the rightare over-developed. Other hypertrophied structures include the left gracile and cuneatenuclei, the right lemniscus medialis, together with the anterior funiculus, posterior hornand the nucleus dorsalis in the right half of the spinal cord. The postnatal heightened use of bodily organs naturally induces an over-developmentof, besides others, the central structure. With a short life-span and retarded develop-ment, the present case had a too limited activity to influence the size of its central or-gans. Moreover, a number of central nuclear masses manifest a compensatory enlarge-ment, thus indicating a heightened mitotic activity of the nerve cells in the embryonicperiod. This hypertrophy is, them, largely prenatal. The current theories of compensation such as self-regulation, substitution and trans-fer of functions, are not explanatory and, thus, unsatisfactory. Behind such concepts,there shou1d exist a more fundamental and yet unspecified factor of growth. The pre-sent study has demonstrated more facts of compensatory development than the previousauthors. As to the theories of compensation, it is better to reserve a definite judgement.

To meet the needs for high-speed draught of machine tools, a drive circuit for the power stepping motor is proposed. The formula for calculating the parameters of circuit elements is obtained through circuit analysis and the concept of mean values of composite rotating electromotive forces is made use of to find the formulas for winding currents both in high and low frequency ranges, thus determining the range of voltage self-regulation and the normalized torque-frequency characteristic in low frequency...

Calculations are carried out for the governing stability-limit curves concerning four hydroelectric plants, with and without a surge tank. The characteristics of the water turbines are considered.Conditions are made to vary by taking the turbines real and ideal, the load self-regulation coefficients equal to one and zero,and the criteria for stability of high and low orders. The factors of the conduit head-loss and the permanent speed droop are allowed for.Explicit algebraic equations for the calculation are obtained and arranged in the successive-substitution format to render easy computation. The calculated curves differ from each other in many respects. In one instance the curve appears concave downwards and another like a half loop as contrary to the usual manner.It is pointed out that care should be taken when sometimes for simplicity's sake an ideal turbine is assumed in the place of the real one in a calculation.For the case of hydro systems equipped with surge tanks,this simplification may be utterly wrong because it leads to the erroneous conclusion that the larger the tank cross-sectional area,the less stable the system.Calculations based on real turbines show the varying in the opposite way,which conforms to experience. On the other hand,in the case of a hydro system dispensed with the surge tank, it is found that the assumption of an ideal water turbine is allowable when the ratio of the mechanical starting time to the water starting time is large, and only then can the error be small.There are 14 or 11 parameters affecting the governing stability,according to the system with or without a surge tank.It is of importance to take into account the parameters of actual conditions and as complete as possible.
