Using various cohesive devices to achieve coherent discouree should become one of the major criteria to assess students" English writing ability. This paper aims to describe and analyze cohesive and coherence errors in the English compositions of non-English major college students in Chongcjing university from the perspective of reference, substitution and ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. Furthermore, two feasible countermeasures to develop students' ability to use those cohesive devices, which take pedagogical practice of college English teaching in-to account, are also presented. These include how to provide svstematic training in cohesion and coherence and how to guide students to check their own work for relevant errors.
